I SAW YOU

A Poem About Love, Loss and Seeing Someone Truly

“I Saw You” is a free verse poem about love, vulnerability, emotional connection, and the moment of truly seeing another person — before illusion, before fear. By Barbara Camilo

About This Poem

This poem explores the pain of absence, the beauty of recognition, and the quiet devastation of loving deeply.
It reflects on emotional intimacy, loss, memory, and the experience of falling in love without protection.

I SAW YOU (Poem)
Waking up here
without you
is so painful.
Realizing I wanted
to do so much,
to say so much,
but despair
was stuck
in my throat.
I only hope
my eyes
told you everything
I feel for you.
I wanted to tell you:
I saw you.
From the very first moment.
I saw you before I fell in love —
laughing,
light,
just being you.
Free from any illusion
I might have created.
And that’s why
I fell.
Before I had
any second thoughts,
I was already lost —
in the middle of the ocean,
adrift,
no life vest,
ready to drown.
I saw you hurt,
I saw you rise from ashes,
I saw your courage,
your strength.
And in that moment,
I realized:
what a beautiful thing.
How can someone
be this beautiful?
I close my eyes
and see you again —
your husky voice whispering,
your warm laughter,
your dangerous smile.
And now I know:
I remember the freckles
on your skin,
the ones that give me chills.
And now I see —
I was in the ocean,
adrift,
without a life vest.
As if waking up
from a dream.
And I know…
I can’t even
save myself.

Reflection

This poem is about seeing someone fully — without illusion — and still choosing to fall.
It speaks to those who have loved deeply, vulnerably, and without safety.
